Less noise, more range: why Michelin is developing EV-only tyres

Pilot Sport EV is the new name for the new tyre that Michelin has developed specifically for high performance EVs

This is not the first for an electric car that Michelin has produced. That honour goes to the Energy EV, the tyre the company made for the original Renault Zoe.

The Pilot Sport EV features what Michelin calls its GreenPower compound on its shoulders to boost driving range by a claimed 10% compared with the company’s existing Pilot Sport tyre.

My Tesla M3 was supplied with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 T1, presumably the base tyre for this development.  They are certainly quiet, thanks to the polyurethane band of acoustic foam to reduce ‘cavity noise’ between the top of the tyre and the wheel arch.  Unfortunately though, this foam insert apparently renders them irreparable in the event of a simple puncture when you pick up a screw in the middle of the tread surface, which ordinarily could be plugged quite safely.  As I discovered recently, a screw in your brand new tyre now means the cost of a whole new tyre (ouch!).
